Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 46x50

  • In this build-up practice, a team of seven outfield players plus a goalkeeper attempt to build and progress possession against five pressing defenders. The possession team aims to retain the ball under pressure while looking to score into any of the four mini goals positioned ahead of them. The two full backs are locked outside the main grid and operate up and down the touchlines to support circulation and progression, while the number 10 is locked into a horizontal central zone at the top of the grid to provide advanced support between lines. If the five defenders regain possession, they must counter-attack quickly and attempt to score against the goalkeeper, reinforcing realistic transition moments.

  • • Building with Patience and Purpose:
Encourage the possession team to circulate the ball with composure, drawing pressure before exploiting spaces to progress play forward.

    • Use of Full Backs for Width:
Coach full backs to provide consistent width, correct timing of support and forward passing options to stretch the defensive shape.

    • Role of the Number 10:
Emphasise intelligent movement, scanning and positioning between lines to receive on the half-turn and connect attacks effectively.

    • Reaction on Defensive Regain:
Reinforce immediate transition behaviours for defenders, attacking forward quickly and decisively upon winning possession.

  • Touch Limit in Central Areas:
Apply a two- or three-touch limit for central players to increase speed of circulation and decision-making.

    Focus:
Improves tempo, sharper first-touch execution and faster recognition of forward progression opportunities under pressure.

  • Directional Counter-Attack Constraint:
Require defenders to score within a time limit or through a specific mini goal when possession is regained.

    Focus:
Enhances transition realism, encourages vertical play and sharpens counter-attacking efficiency and awareness.
