Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • In this counter-attack and recovery practice, three attackers begin just below the halfway line and attack against two central defenders. The attacking team initially looks to exploit the temporary numerical advantage by progressing quickly and directly towards goal. Once the attackers cross a designated trigger line, two recovering full backs are allowed to sprint back from wide positions to support the defence, potentially creating a 4v3 advantage for the defending team. This forces the attackers to recognise moments to play with speed and purpose before the defensive recovery arrives, while defenders are challenged to delay, recover and protect central areas effectively.

  • • Speed of Counter-Attack:
Encourage attackers to recognise the overload early and attack with tempo, direct running and decisive actions.

    • Decision Making in Overloads:
Coach players to identify when to pass, carry or finish quickly before defensive numbers recover.

    • Defensive Delay and Positioning:
Emphasise the importance of delaying play, protecting central spaces and forcing attackers wide where possible.

    • Recovery Runs and Communication:
Reinforce full backs sprinting with intensity, recovering inside positions and communicating clearly with central defenders.

  • Limited Touches for Attackers:
Introduce a touch restriction for attackers to increase speed of play and reduce over-dribbling.

    Focus:
Improves quick decision-making, sharper execution and greater urgency during counter-attacking moments.

  • Defensive Advantage Triggered Earlier:
Allow recovering full backs to enter the practice sooner or from varied starting distances.

    Focus:
Challenges attackers to recognise shrinking windows of opportunity and execute actions under increasing pressure.
