Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: X
This unopposed passing drill focuses on developing “up, back, and through” combinations to promote effective central penetration. Players are arranged with one central player and two outer players on either side of the grid.
The ball begins with one of the deeper players, who plays into the an outer player (“up”), receives a layoff pass back (“back”), and then plays a forward pass through the poles into the opposite outer player (“through”). This pattern continues side to side, encouraging rhythm and movement.
The initial wide passes are used to simulate drawing pressure from imaginary defenders, creating space centrally for the penetrating “through” pass. Players rotate positions after a set number of repetitions to ensure varied practice.
• Weight & Timing: Ensure passes are properly weighted and timed to maintain rhythm and simulate match intensity.
• Scanning & Awareness: Players should check shoulders before receiving to replicate game-realistic pressure recognition.
• Communication: Encourage verbal and non-verbal cues to keep the drill flowing and realistic.
• Tempo: Maintain a quick tempo to replicate game speed and decision-making.
One-Touch Combinations:
Challenge players to complete the entire “up, back, through” sequence using one-touch passing.
Focus: Develops speed of play, sharper decision-making, and first-touch quality under time constraints.
