Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 35x20

  • This drill focuses on developing pressing and protecting forward passes. Players will pass the ball back and forth, while the pressing players are tasked with using the press and cover concept to prevent any of the 2 players in possession from breaking lines.

Once a pass is made across the grid, the team that passed the ball must transition quickly and become the new pressing duo. The two pressing players must adopt a press-and-cover approach, moving in tandem to ensure they cover passing options and deny space. Importantly, the pressing players are not aiming to win the ball directly but are working on shadow play to develop their understanding of when and how to press effectively.

  • • Press and Cover Concept: Encourage the pressing players to maintain a compact shape, with one player applying pressure to the ball while the other covers passing lanes. The covering player should ensure they remain in a position to intercept or block any potential forward passes.

    • Angle of Pressing: Emphasize the importance of the angle at which the pressing player approaches the ball. The pressing player should always angle their body in a way that forces the ball carrier into the cover player, preventing easy line breaks.

    • Communication: Players should communicate constantly, especially when transitioning from defending to pressing. Clear verbal cues and non-verbal signals (like hand gestures) will help improve coordination and prevent the attackers from exploiting any gaps.

    • Transition Speed: Stress the need for quick transitions between attacking and defending. As soon as the ball is passed, the team must quickly shift their mentality to pressing, ensuring there are no delays in the movement.

    • Pressing Without Winning the Ball: Reinforce the idea that the pressing players are not looking to win the ball immediately but to disrupt the offensive flow and force mistakes. The focus should be on positioning, timing, and working together to limit the attacking options.

  • Pressing Team Wins the Ball to Score:

Now allow the pressing team to score if they win possession. They can immediately transition and attack the goal or mini goal located on one end of the grid.

Focus: Encourages the pressing team to not only disrupt possession but also to capitalize on their successful defensive actions by transitioning quickly into attack.
