Instructions/Setup:
This unopposed corner routine drill is designed to help players learn various corner delivery techniques and movements to create goal-scoring opportunities. The team will practice their set-piece routine with a focus on timing, spacing, and coordination. Players will position themselves according to the chosen routine (e.g., near post, far post, edge of the box, etc.) and work to execute the set play under minimal pressure.
The corner taker will deliver the ball into the designated area, while the other players make runs to attack the ball or create space. The focus is on smooth, well-timed movements and effective ball delivery. The drill is unopposed, allowing the attacking team to concentrate on executing their routine to perfection.
Coaching Notes:
• Timing of Runs: Ensure that attacking players time their runs to the ball correctly. Whether it’s attacking the near post, far post, or edge of the box, the players should be well-timed in their movements to meet the delivery.
• Movement to Create Space: Players should work on off-the-ball movement to pull defenders out of position, making it easier for teammates to get a clear shot at goal. Movement should be quick and dynamic, with players changing direction to create space in key areas.
• Delivery Quality: Emphasize the importance of delivering the ball with the correct weight, pace, and accuracy. The corner taker must consistently place the ball into the designated area, whether it’s a driven cross, floated ball, or short corner.
• Target Areas: Players should understand where to attack based on the type of delivery (e.g., near post, far post, or central). Each player should be aware of their role in relation to the ball's flight path and their teammates’ movements.
• Communication: Encourage clear communication between the corner taker and attacking players. This ensures everyone knows when to make their run and where the ball will be delivered.
Progression 1: Add Light Pressure from Defenders:
Introduce passive defenders to lightly pressurize the attackers during the delivery and movement. The defenders should focus on tracking runs and challenging for the ball but not actively blocking or winning it.
Focus: Develops the ability to execute corner routines while under light pressure, simulating more realistic game situations and forcing players to adjust their timing and runs.
