Instructions/Setup:
Play begins with 6 players in possession, attempting to retain the ball against 3 defenders in a defined area. The attacking team (6 players) works on maintaining possession through quick, short passes and movement. If the defending team (3 players) wins possession, they transition quickly and attempt to score in one of the 2 mini goals placed on either side of the grid.
When possession is lost, the outside players from the team that was previously in possession must immediately counter-press, applying pressure to the defenders and attempting to regain the ball before the defenders can score. The goal of this practice is to develop the players' counter-pressing skills and improve their ability to react quickly after losing possession.
Coaching Notes:
• Counter-Pressing Immediately After Losing Possession: As soon as the attacking team loses possession, emphasize the importance of the outside players quickly transitioning into a counter-pressing role. They should move quickly to close down space and apply pressure to the ball carrier to regain possession.
• Defensive Awareness: The 3 defenders must be sharp in recognizing when they win the ball and take advantage of the opportunity to score in the mini goals. Quick transitions to attack are crucial to exploit the unbalanced attacking team.
• Shape and Compactness: Encourage the players to keep their shape, both in possession and during the counter-pressing phase. The defending team should work together to close off passing lanes and force the attackers into tight spaces, while the counter-pressing players should cover key areas quickly.
• Quick Decision-Making: The players on the outside need to quickly assess the situation when possession is lost, deciding whether to press the ball or cover space. Quick decision-making in these moments is essential for effective counter-pressing.
• Communication: Strong verbal communication is vital. The defending team and counter-pressing players need to be vocal, guiding each other through the press and ensuring no spaces are left open for the attackers to exploit.
Progression 1: Add More Defenders:
Increase the number of defenders to 4, making it more challenging for the attacking team to retain possession. The defensive team should be rewarded for regaining possession and scoring in the mini goals.
Focus: Develops defensive organization and the ability to regain possession under increased pressure, reinforcing the importance of counter-pressing after losing possession.
Progression 2: Limit Attacking Touches:
Limit the attacking players to a certain number of touches (e.g., 2 touches per player), forcing them to move the ball quicker and creating a more dynamic counter-pressing situation.
Focus: Encourages quicker ball circulation from the attacking team, forcing the defending team to apply pressure more rapidly and transition effectively during the counter-pressing phase.
