Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 1 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This 1-to-1 finishing drill helps players improve their first touch, awareness, and ability to finish quickly under changing conditions. The coach plays a pass to the player positioned just outside the penalty area. As the ball travels, the coach calls out one of three colour-coded gates. The player must take their first touch through the correct gate before finishing on goal, simulating real-time decision-making based on visual and verbal cues.

  • • React Quickly to the Colour Cue From the Coach – Train your mind to instantly process instructions and adjust your body shape mid-movement.

    • Take a Purposeful First Touch Toward the Correct Gate – Drive the ball firmly but under control through the correct channel to set up the finish.

    • Adjust Body Angle to Finish From Varying Distances – Control your hips and feet positioning to strike cleanly from multiple angles after each gate.

    • Scan Early and Stay Balanced When Receiving – Prepare your body before the pass arrives to take clean, composed touches under pressure.

  • Vary the Speed and Type of Coach Pass
Use slower passes, fast rollers, or slight bouncers to force players to adapt their receiving technique and timing before finishing.

    Focus:
Improves touch control, finishing consistency, and adaptability under unpredictable delivery types.

  • Introduce a Passive Defender Behind the Gates
Add a passive defender who shadows the gates after the coach’s call, increasing pressure and limiting space for execution.

    Focus:
Develops composure, timing of touches, and the ability to make decisions in dynamic scenarios.
