Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 50x40
This two-phase attacking drill is designed to work on creating and finishing in overloaded situations. It begins with 2 defenders playing a pass into 3 attackers, triggering a 3v2 attacking phase toward goal. The attackers must use the overload to combine quickly and create a goalscoring opportunity.
Once the first phase is complete, play immediately transitions into phase two. Two players in wide channels combine to deliver a cross into the box. At this point, a second 3v2 scenario becomes live inside the penalty area, with the same attacking trio aiming to convert the cross under pressure from the defenders.
The drill promotes sharp attacking movement, intelligent positioning, and clinical finishing from different service types.
• Speed of Play: Encourage attackers to exploit the overload quickly before the defenders can recover or delay.
• Positioning in the Box: Attackers must time their runs into the box to avoid being static when the cross is delivered.
• Variety of Combinations: Promote the use of wall passes, overlaps, and quick give-and-go's during both phases.
• Wide Player Delivery: Crosses should vary—driven, floated, or cut-back—based on defender positioning and attacker runs.
• Defensive Body Shape: Defenders should stay compact but ready to engage—encouraging attackers to be sharp in decision-making.
Add a Recovering Defender:
After the initial 3v2 phase begins, allow one recovering defender to join from behind the play, increasing defensive pressure and testing attackers’ decision-making.
Focus: Enhances realism and encourages quicker, more decisive actions in overload scenarios.
Aerial Finish Requirement:
For the second phase, require at least one attacker to attempt an aerial finish from the cross.
Focus: Trains timing, body control, and attacking headers or volleys from wide service under pressure.
