Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 5 | Pitch size: 10x10
This technical passing warm-up focuses on developing third-man combinations within a simple triangular passing structure. Players circulate the ball with purpose, using supporting movements and well-timed runs to create third-man actions that allow play to continue fluidly. The emphasis is on clean technique, awareness of teammates and efficient movement to maintain rhythm.
The practice encourages players to receive, pass and move continuously, following their actions to rotate positions and create new passing angles. By keeping the structure simple and unopposed, players can concentrate on first-touch quality, body shape and timing, making it an effective activation exercise before more complex game-based practices.
• Timing of the Third-Man Movement:
Emphasise supporting players moving at the correct moment to receive on the move without slowing ball circulation.
• Body Shape to Play Forward:
Encourage players to receive side-on with an open body shape to see multiple passing options early.
• Weight and Detail of Pass:
Reinforce crisp, accurate passes that allow the next action to be played smoothly at tempo.
• Movement After the Pass:
Coach players to follow their pass with intent, rotate positions quickly and maintain constant passing angles.
Coach Call to Change Direction:
On the coach’s shout or signal, players must immediately change the direction of the passing pattern and reorganise the third-man combination.
Focus:
Improves scanning, communication, adaptability and speed of decision-making when patterns are disrupted unexpectedly.
