Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 50x65
In this unopposed attacking pattern and finishing drill, players are set up across five stations: two central midfielders (CM) and three attackers (left winger (LW), center forward (CF), and right winger (RW)).
The drill begins with the players completing a series of predefined passing routines, focusing on movement, timing, and ball circulation. The attackers will then work in tandem with the central midfielders, receiving passes, and executing specific movements to create goal-scoring opportunities.
The drill ends with a cross from either the left or right winger, followed by a finish from the center forward. Mannequins are strategically placed to help attackers visualize and anticipate the spaces they will need to play in during the game.
• Movement Off the Ball: Encourage attackers to make dynamic runs, creating space for themselves and their teammates. The center forward should be aware of the angles of runs made by the wingers and adjust accordingly to receive the ball in dangerous positions.
• Timing of Passes: Focus on the timing of the passes, ensuring that the ball is played to the feet or into space based on the run made by the attacker. Central midfielders must demonstrate good vision and awareness to play the correct pass.
• Mannequin Use: The mannequins should be treated as defenders. Players must work on reading the space around the mannequins and making runs to avoid being blocked or closed down.
• Finishing Technique: When finishing, encourage attackers to use the correct technique (inside foot for placement, laces for power), and focus on shooting quickly and accurately, especially when receiving crosses.
• Communication: Communication between the wingers, center forward, and central midfielders is key to executing the passing routine smoothly and ensuring everyone is aware of their role in the pattern.
Add Defender Pressure:
Introduce passive defenders in the central midfield or wide areas. The defenders will apply light pressure to force players to make quicker decisions and execute the passing patterns under slightly more challenging conditions.
Focus: Encourages quicker decision-making and sharper ball control when under pressure.
2 Players Attacking the Box:
When the left winger crosses from the left side, the right winger should now make a run to attack the back post, making it a two-player attacking presence in the box. This creates more options for the center forward, increasing the chances of a goal-scoring opportunity.
Focus: Increases attacking options in the box, encouraging attackers to support each other and attack the cross from multiple angles.
