Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 40x40

  • Play starts with 1 player positioned centrally, with 2 players on the outer central line (acting as wingers) and 4 mannequins or poles placed on the central line. The deeper central player serves as the starting point.

The drill begins with a pass made from a deeper central position into the central player. This player then combines with the deeper player before playing a penetrative through ball between the mannequins or poles, allowing one of the outer wide players to run onto the ball. The play then mirrors with the higher central player, creating a back-and-forth flow from top to bottom.

  • • Ball Movement: Emphasize quick and accurate passing to move the ball efficiently from one side to the other.

    • Timing of Runs: The wide players should time their runs perfectly to ensure they meet the through ball at the correct moment.

    • Through Ball Technique: Players must focus on playing a clean and weighted through ball that allows the wide player to continue their run without losing momentum.

    • Combination Play: Encourage fluid combinations between the central players to manipulate the defensive lines and open up passing lanes.

    • Scanning: The central player must always scan to recognize when to play the penetrating pass or make the combination.

  • Increase the Pressure:

Introduce 1 or 2 defenders in the central area who are tasked with putting pressure on the central players, forcing them to play quicker and under pressure.

Focus: This progression adds pressure and helps players improve decision-making and passing under pressure.

  • Add a Finishing Element:

Once the wide player receives the ball after the through pass, they now attempt to finish the play by shooting at a goal or a mini-goal.

Focus: The progression emphasizes converting attacking opportunities after the through ball and promotes quick transitions from midfield to attack.
