Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 16 | Pitch size: Half-Pitch
This attacking the box practice starts with a wide combination before a cross into the box. Teams will take it in turns attacking the box 3v2 and are competing head-to-head to score the highest number of goals. The practice is timed, and the team with the most goals scored are the winners. Players will rotate throughout the practice and must fulfill all 3 positions of attacker, defender, and crosser.
• Attacker Timing – The attacking players should focus on timing their runs into the box. They must make sure to arrive at the right moment to meet the cross and take the shot with composure.
• Crossing Accuracy – The crosser must focus on delivering accurate and quality crosses into the box, ensuring the ball is played into dangerous areas for the attacking players to attack.
• Defender Positioning – The defenders should focus on closing down the attackers quickly and making sure they are positioned between the ball and the goal. They should be aware of the attackers' movements and anticipate their runs.
• Finishing Technique – The attackers need to be clinical in their finishing, working on different types of finishes, such as volleys, headers, or first-time shots, depending on the ball's delivery.
Increase Attacking Overload
To increase the intensity, allow the attacking team to have more players in the box, creating a greater numerical advantage and more opportunities for crosses and finishes.
Focus: Creating space in the box and exploiting numerical superiority.
Limit Touches for Crossers
Limit the number of touches the crosser can take before delivering the ball. This forces quicker decision-making and sharper crosses.
Focus: Quick decision-making and faster ball delivery to increase tempo.
