Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 1 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
This drill is designed to develop a defender’s ability to defend crosses under continuous physical demand. Positioned on a small-sided pitch with two full-sized goals at opposite ends, the defender will sprint from one goal to the other, defending crosses delivered from wide areas at each end. The drill emphasizes aerial defending, timing, and fitness through repeated high-intensity efforts across the length of the pitch.
• Focus on Proper Positioning and Timing When Defending Crosses – Anticipate the flight of the ball to make effective clearances or interceptions.
• Use Strong, Controlled Aerial Challenges – Win headers with power and precision while maintaining balance and body control.
• Communicate Clearly with the Goalkeeper and Teammates – Organize the defensive area to cover key attacking threats during each cross.
• Maintain High Intensity and Quick Recovery Between Sprints – Build the stamina to repeatedly track back and contest crosses without loss of concentration.
Increase the Pace and Frequency of Crosses
Deliver crosses more rapidly and consistently to raise physical demands and improve decision-making speed under fatigue.
Focus:
Builds aerobic fitness, defensive alertness, and quick reaction skills during continuous high-pressure defending.
Add an Attacker to Challenge the Defender
Introduce an active attacker making runs to increase the defender’s need to track runners and defend crosses with greater intensity.
Focus:
Enhances one-on-one defensive skills, spatial awareness, and the ability to win aerial duels under realistic pressure.
