Birmingham Midfield Build Up

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 40x60
This build-up practice encourages a midfield 3 to maintain a well-structured shape, enabling smooth progression of the ball. The practice area is a large square divided into 4 separate zones.
The midfield 3 must each occupy a different grid and use quick movements and rotations to receive the ball and progress it into the attacker. This encourages fluidity and positional awareness while promoting efficient ball circulation.
If any of the defenders win possession, they can counter-attack towards the main goal. The defenders who began the practice unopposed will then enter live play, transitioning into the defensive phase.
• Movement and Rotation: The midfield 3 should focus on making dynamic, well-timed movements to create passing options, ensuring they remain fluid and unpredictable for the opposition.
• Positional Awareness: Each midfielder should be aware of their positioning relative to the other two midfielders and the attackers, ensuring that they provide support and options in every phase of the build-up.
• Quick Passing: Encourage players to move the ball quickly and decisively, using short, sharp passes to maintain tempo and avoid defensive pressure.
• Defensive Transition: If possession is lost, the team must quickly switch to defensive mode, with the defenders joining the live play to apply pressure and prevent a counter-attack.
Restrict Pass Types:
Restrict the midfielders to using only one-touch passes to increase speed and improve decision-making under pressure.
Focus: This progression forces faster thinking and sharper execution, enhancing the midfielders' ability to progress the ball quickly while under pressure.
