Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 50x65
This drill begins opposed and transitions into an unopposed attacking phase. Play starts with a 4v2 rondo in the center circle, where after 'x' number of successful passes, the attacking team can break out and complete an unopposed attacking phase.
The attacking phase should consist of various combinations between the fullback and winger before delivering the ball into the number 9. The fullback and winger should focus on overlapping and underlapping runs to create space and confusion for the defenders, providing multiple options for a final pass.
• Quick Passing in the Rondo: The attacking team should focus on quick, sharp passes to maintain possession and create opportunities for the breakout phase.
• Overlapping Runs: The fullback should look to overlap the winger, creating width and pulling defenders out of position. The winger can then use this extra space to receive the ball in more dangerous areas.
• Underlapping Runs: The winger should also be prepared to underlap the fullback, making runs inside the fullback to receive the ball in a more central position. This can be especially effective when the defending team is focused on stopping the fullback’s overlapping run.
• Combination Play: Encourage quick combination play between the fullback, winger, and the number 9 to break down the defensive line. The key is fluid movement and constant communication to create space for effective crosses or passes into the striker.
• Attacking Final Phase: Once the ball is delivered to the number 9, they should focus on finishing with composure, using the space created by the fullback and winger’s movement.
Add a Defender to the Attacking Phase:
Introduce one defender into the attacking phase to create a 3v2 situation, forcing the attacking players to work harder on their combinations and movements to outnumber the defense.
Focus: This progression improves the attacking team’s ability to create and exploit space under pressure, while also encouraging effective decision-making in final-third situations.
Add a Second Number 9:
Introduce a second number 9 to the attacking phase, allowing for more varied attacking options and combinations. This creates more space for the winger and fullback to work with and provides more opportunities to finish the attack.
Focus: This progression promotes the use of dynamic runs and combination play between the two strikers, encouraging more movement off the ball and increased options in the final third.
