Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 15 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch
This dynamic counter-attacking practice begins in a central zone where three attacking players attempt to break defensive lines and play through to three teammates positioned on the opposite side. Between them are three defenders who aim to screen, intercept, and win possession. If the defenders win the ball, they immediately counter-attack toward the main goal, supported by wide players who join the attack quickly.
Once this first counter is underway, the coach will immediately play a second ball into the opposite direction for the remaining players to launch their own counter-attack. This creates two simultaneous, rapid transitions, emphasizing speed of thought, recovery runs, and attacking intent from both teams.
• Encourage fast ball movement and sharp passing through central areas – Players should focus on tempo and timing when trying to break defensive lines cleanly.
• Highlight the positioning and body shape of screening defenders – Defenders must angle themselves properly to read passes and cut off central lanes effectively.
• Promote explosive forward runs during the counter attack – Players must transition with urgency and support wide quickly to overload the defending side.
• Emphasize scanning and reaction speed as play flips directions – All players must stay alert and react instantly when the second ball is introduced.
Limit players to two-touch in central build-up
Restrict the three central attackers to two touches each when attempting to break lines to increase the challenge and speed of play.
Focus: Promotes sharper decision-making, quicker passing, and greater spatial awareness under time pressure.
