Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 30x50

  • This build-up practice takes place inside a 30x50 yard grid divided into three horizontal zones. The possession team consists of two goalkeepers and five outfield players (7 total) who work together to maintain possession against five pressing defenders. The defenders are restricted so only one defender may occupy the central zone at any time, encouraging the possession team to switch play quickly between zones.

By moving the ball across the three zones, the possession team can create numerical overloads in the central zone, exploiting the limited defensive presence there. This setup encourages smart switching, quick ball circulation, and exploiting space to retain control under pressure.

  • • Encourage constant scanning and awareness to identify moments when the central zone is lightly defended – Players should exploit these overloads by switching play quickly and accurately.

    • Promote crisp, accurate passing and fast decision-making under pressure – Maintaining high tempo prevents defenders from recovering and reorganizing their shape effectively.

    • Stress the importance of support and movement off the ball to create multiple passing options across all zones – Active positioning is key to retain possession and manipulate defenders.

    • Remind defenders to coordinate pressing intensity while respecting the one-player limit in the central zone – This forces the possession team to be patient and creative with their ball circulation.

  • Add a time limit for possession switches between zones

Require the possession team to switch play between zones within a certain number of seconds to increase tempo and decision-making speed.

Focus: Improves quick thinking, speed of execution, and pressure handling in tight spaces.

  • Allow two defenders in the central zone

Increase central defensive pressure by permitting two defenders in the central zone, forcing the possession team to find alternative ways to create overloads.

Focus: Encourages more creative movement and passing options to break down increased defensive pressure.
