Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This central breakout practice is set inside a 15x15 yard grid where four players, including a goalkeeper, work together to progress the ball out from a tight central area. The main goal is to move the ball efficiently from this starting zone into the attacking final third, emphasizing quick combination play and effective positioning to break through the opponent’s initial defensive pressure.

Once the ball is successfully played into the final third, the players immediately transition into a 3v3 attacking scenario where they look to create scoring opportunities. This drill develops quick decision-making, tight control under pressure, and seamless transition from build-up play to attack.

  • • Emphasize sharp, accurate passing and quick movement to break defensive lines in tight spaces – Players should focus on timing their runs and supporting the ball carrier effectively.

    • Encourage communication and awareness of available passing options to maintain possession under pressure – Constant scanning helps anticipate defensive pressure and identify breakthroughs.

    • Promote quick transitions from possession to attack once the ball enters the final third – Players must switch mindset instantly to capitalize on attacking opportunities.

    • Highlight the importance of positioning to create passing lanes and exploit defensive weaknesses – Effective spacing opens up more attacking options in the 3v3 phase.

  • Limit players to two touches in the breakout phase

Restrict players to a maximum of two touches when moving the ball inside the starting grid to speed up play and improve technical control.

Focus: Encourages sharper control, quicker passing, and improved ball mastery under pressure.
