Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • This technical passing drill involves two players working simultaneously around a marked grid, focusing specifically on diagonal passing patterns. Players aim to improve their ability to execute sharp, accurate diagonal passes that break lines and create forward momentum. The drill emphasizes body positioning, timing, and first-touch control to enable effective diagonal penetration through the opposition’s defensive shape.

As the players move around the grid, they work on receiving the ball on the move and playing incisive diagonal passes to each other, simulating the quick changes of direction and space exploitation needed in match situations. The drill encourages quick decision-making, smooth transitions, and precision to help develop dynamic passing combinations.

  • • Focus on proper body orientation to facilitate quick diagonal passes – Players should open up their hips to see passing lanes clearly and prepare for the next immediate action.

    • Emphasize crisp, well-weighted passes that penetrate lines effectively – Accurate passing speed and direction are crucial for consistently breaking defensive shapes cleanly.

    • Promote sharp first touches to control and direct the ball into attacking spaces – A quality first touch allows players to maintain flow and create immediate penetration opportunities.

    • Encourage constant scanning and communication to anticipate partner’s movements – Awareness helps players time passes and off-the-ball runs for maximum effectiveness and tempo.

  • Limit touches to one or two per player

Restricting players to one or two touches increases the tempo and demands sharper control and passing, further developing quick thinking and technical proficiency under time constraints.

Focus: Enhances speed of play and sharpens technical execution during fast diagonal passing sequences.
