Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 4 | Pitch size: 10x20
This reactive 1v1 drill begins with two players sprinting into a grid facing each other. The attacking player must quickly decide to sprint left or right to collect one of two balls placed in those directions. Using body feints and deceptive movement, the attacker aims to create separation from the defender before reaching the chosen ball.
Once the attacker has possession, the 1v1 phase is live and they must use their skills and speed to beat the defender and score into one of two mini goals positioned behind them. This drill sharpens reaction time, decision-making, and quick attacking transitions under pressure.
• Emphasize explosive starts and quick reaction to the coach’s signal – Players must develop sharp responsiveness to sudden changes in direction and decision-making.
• Encourage use of body feints and deceptive footwork to create separation – Attacking players should focus on misdirecting the defender to gain space effectively.
• Stress maintaining control of the ball during the initial sprint and transition – Smooth ball control ensures the attacker can capitalize on the created separation quickly.
• Promote quick decision-making and composure when choosing which ball to sprint towards – Players need to make fast, confident choices under pressure to succeed in this drill.
Restrict attacker to one or two touches after collecting the ball
Limit touches to force quicker decision-making and more precise execution during the 1v1 attacking phase, simulating higher pressure scenarios.
Focus: Develops sharper technical skills and faster attacking decisions under pressure.
