Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 16 | Pitch size: 40x40

  • This transfer rondo is played across four separate grids, with two teams each occupying two grids of four players. Play begins in one grid, where a team of four attempts to retain possession while two defenders from the opposite grid enter to press and win the ball. The possession team must circulate the ball with control, completing a minimum number of passes before looking to transfer play.

Once the pass target is achieved, the ball is transferred to the team’s second grid, where a new pair of defenders enter to apply pressure. This creates a continuous cycle of possession and pressing across both grids. If the defenders win possession at any point, they immediately return to their own grid and the roles switch, with the teams of eight players changing between possession and defending.

  • • Ball Circulation and Patience:
Encourage players to move the ball with purpose, maintaining control while waiting for the right moment to transfer.

    • Timing of the Transfer Pass:
Reinforce recognising when to switch play, ensuring the pass is accurate and well-weighted to reach the next grid.

    • Support and Movement Off the Ball:
Coach players to create angles and passing options, constantly adjusting position to support the ball carrier.

    • Pressing Intensity and Coordination:
Emphasise defenders working together, closing space quickly and forcing mistakes through coordinated pressing actions.

  • Increase Pass Requirement Before Transfer:
Raise the number of required passes before switching grids to increase difficulty and time under pressure.

    Focus:
Improves patience, technical consistency and ability to retain possession for longer periods under pressure.
