Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 50x40

  • This midfield build-up practice begins with a 3v3 in a central area, where the attacking team looks to retain possession and identify opportunities to progress play forward. The objective is to find one of three advanced players positioned between lines—two wide and one central—using well-timed, accurate passes that break defensive pressure.

Once one of the forward players receives, they must turn quickly and drive forward to initiate an attack on the main goal. Two additional defenders become active in this phase, creating a 3v2 attacking scenario. The attackers must combine effectively and make quick decisions to exploit the overload, while defenders attempt to delay and protect the goal.

  • • Breaking Lines from Midfield:
Encourage midfielders to recognise passing lanes early and play forward with disguise, accuracy and correct timing.

    • Receiving Between the Lines:
Reinforce body shape, scanning and awareness so attackers can turn quickly and attack space immediately.

    • Speed of Transition to Attack:
Emphasise quick reactions once the forward pass is made, driving forward before defenders can organise.

    • Decision-Making in the Final Phase:
Coach attackers to commit defenders, combine efficiently and select the best option to finish the attack.

  • Touch Limit in Midfield Phase:
Apply a two- or three-touch limit during the 3v3 phase to increase tempo and passing speed.

    Focus:
Improves ball circulation, quicker decisions and ability to play forward under pressure.

  • Add a Recovering Defender:
Allow one midfielder from the first phase to recover into the 3v2 attack after a short delay.

    Focus:
Increases realism, challenges attackers to act quickly and improves decision-making under pressure.
