Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 20x36

  • This overloaded small-sided game is played across two connected grids, each containing two attackers, two defenders and a goalkeeper. Play begins with the defending team building from the back, attempting to play forward under pressure from two pressing attackers. The objective is to break the press and find their two advanced teammates in the opposite grid, where they can progress the attack and attempt to score.

To support the build-up, one of the two attackers in the higher grid can drop into the deeper zone, creating a temporary overload to help play through the press. This movement encourages decision-making around when to drop, how to receive under pressure and how to connect play between zones. The practice replicates realistic build-up scenarios under pressure while promoting intelligent movement and positional awareness.

  • • Building Under Pressure:
Encourage defenders to remain composed, use the goalkeeper effectively and recognise the right moments to play forward.

    • Use of the Overload:
Coach attackers to time their drop into deeper areas, creating space and numerical advantages to support progression.

    • Pressing Organisation:
Reinforce coordinated pressing, closing passing lanes and working together to force mistakes in the build-up phase.

    • Decision-Making Between Zones:
Emphasise recognising when to play forward, when to recycle and how to connect play efficiently across both grids.

  • Touch Limit in Build-Up Zone:
Apply a two- or three-touch limit to increase tempo and challenge decision-making under pressure.

    Focus:
Improves speed of play, technical quality and ability to build under intense pressing situations.
