Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • This practice focuses on maintaining possession and transitioning between possession and pressure phases. Play starts with a 4v2 rondo in an 8x8 grid. The two defending players work to regain possession and then pass the ball out of the 8x8 grid into a larger area. Once the ball is successfully played out of the smaller grid, the second phase begins: an 8v4 rondo inside the larger area. The team in possession aims to complete a specific number of successful passes (X amount) during the 8v4 phase before the practice restarts.

The four players who transition from in-possession to out-of-possession must now work together to win the ball back within the X amount of passes to score points.

  • • Quick Transitions – The key to success in this drill is the speed of transition. The defenders need to quickly shift from pressing in the 8x8 grid to pressing in the larger area. Likewise, the attackers need to maintain possession under pressure and quickly make decisions to exploit space once they have regained the ball.

    • Communication – Encourage constant verbal communication between players, both in terms of organizing the defensive press and making sure the attacking team is aware of the number of passes needed to complete the phase. Players should be in constant motion, scanning the field for passing options and potential pressure.

    • Possession Under Pressure – The players in possession during the 8v4 phase should focus on quick passing and movement off the ball to maintain possession and increase the chance of completing the designated number of passes. The attacking team should also look to exploit any gaps in the defending team’s shape.

    • Defensive Shape and Pressure – The four defenders in the larger area must stay compact and press intelligently. Encourage them to anticipate passes, close down passing lanes, and be aggressive in winning the ball back. If the defenders win the ball, they should look to immediately transition into attack by passing the ball to the designated area (outside the larger grid).

  • Limit the Number of Touches for Attackers
Limit the number of touches each player can take in the 8v4 phase (e.g., 2 touches). This forces the attacking team to make quicker decisions and increases the tempo of the practice.

    Focus:
Improves speed of play and decision-making, encouraging attackers to think and pass quickly under pressure.

  • Add Scoring Opportunities for Attackers
Add small mini-goals or cones inside the larger area that the attackers can aim to pass the ball through after completing the X amount of passes. This adds a goal-scoring aspect to the possession phase and provides more focus for the attacking team.

    Focus:
Increases the attacking team’s motivation to complete successful passes while also simulating real game situations where the focus is not just maintaining possession but also progressing the ball forward.
