Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 5 | Pitch size: 40x50

  • In this finishing practice, play starts with a chipped pass into a deeper player. From this initial pass, the attackers will work in a 2v1 scenario, aiming to create space and generate a goal-scoring opportunity. The defender will apply pressure to the ball carrier, while the line of mannequins acts as an offside line, restricting attacking options and increasing the difficulty of the pass and run combination.

The mannequins simulate defensive pressure by marking a line that attackers must navigate carefully. The timing of runs and the weight of the pass are critical to successfully breaking the defensive line and finishing under pressure. This practice challenges both the attackers' and defenders' decision-making, timing, and ability to perform under match-like conditions.

  • • Attacker Runs – Attackers should focus on timing their runs to avoid running into the mannequins or being caught offside. Their runs must be dynamic and decisive, using the space behind the defender or around the mannequins to create opportunities for a goal.

    • Weight of Pass – The player providing the pass must focus on the weight and timing to ensure the attacking player can receive the ball without being closed down by the defender. The pass should be perfectly timed to meet the attacker as they make their run, allowing them to take a clean touch and finish.

    • Finishing Under Pressure – Once the ball is played to the attacker, they should finish quickly and calmly under pressure. Encourage players to focus on composure and accuracy rather than trying to finish too quickly or with too much power. The goal is to place the ball in a corner or finish with a well-timed touch.

    • Defender’s Role – The single defender should focus on pressuring the ball carrier while trying to anticipate the attacker’s movements and force them into a less advantageous position. The defender must also pay attention to covering the space created by the mannequins and adjusting their positioning accordingly.

  • Add a Second Defender
Introduce a second defender to the drill, creating a more challenging situation for the attackers. This will require them to move the ball quicker and be more precise with their passing and decision-making. The attackers will need to think fast to create space and exploit the overload.

    Focus:
Improves attackers' ability to exploit space and finish in higher-pressure situations with multiple defenders.

  • Vary the Type of Finish
Encourage players to vary the type of finish based on the situation. This could include driven shots, chips, or volleys depending on the timing of the run and where the ball is played. This progression will help attackers to develop a more diverse set of finishing techniques and the ability to adapt to different types of chances.

    Focus:
Develops versatility in finishing and decision-making based on the type of pass and pressure faced.
