Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: Full Pitch

  • This unopposed technical practice focuses on rehearsing three different build-up variations using a 3-2 shape with a box midfield. The setup allows players to work through structured movement patterns and passing sequences that mirror real-game situations where teams build from the back using three defenders and two central midfielders. The aim is to increase familiarity with positional roles, movement timing, and the types of combinations used to progress the ball through thirds in a controlled, predictable way.

  • • Positional Discipline – Players must maintain their roles within the 3-2 structure, understanding how their positioning supports ball progression and team shape retention.

    • Timing of Movement – Midfielders should coordinate their movement in sync with the ball to arrive into pockets of space as the pass is played, not before.

    • Weight and Direction of Pass – All passes must be played with the appropriate pace and direction to allow for fluid combinations and support the intended rhythm of each pattern.

    • Scanning and Detail – Encourage players to scan before receiving and to provide quality detail on passes, such as body shape, foot selection, and pass timing.

  • Add Passive Pressing Triggers
Introduce passive defenders who apply light pressure to guide the build-up in specific directions.
Focus: Encourages players to read pressure cues and adjust positioning and decisions accordingly.

  • Apply Time Constraints to Each Pattern
Set a time limit to complete each build-up sequence from start to finish.
Focus: Develops tempo, urgency, and decision-making under realistic match tempo conditions.
