Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 16 | Pitch size: 40x50

  • This technical passing warm-up allows players to develop multiple attacking patterns, including 3rd man combinations, overlapping runs, and underlapping runs. The drill encourages fluid movement and communication between players as they execute these attacking patterns to break defensive lines.

  • • Fluid Movement – Players should focus on maintaining constant movement off the ball to create passing lanes and space for others. Overlapping and underlapping runs should be well-timed to avoid crowding the attacking area and to maximize options for the passer.

    • Timing of the 3rd Man Run – Players making the 3rd man run should focus on timing their movement to arrive in space at the right moment, allowing them to receive the ball with enough time to make a decisive action towards goal.

    • Pass Selection and Precision – The player in possession should be encouraged to make accurate passes into the path of the runner, whether it's for an overlap or a 3rd man combination. Precision in passing will ensure that the attacking players maintain momentum and create high-quality opportunities.

    • Anticipation and Communication – Encourage players to anticipate their teammates' movements, making sure they communicate with visual or verbal cues before executing the runs. This helps to ensure that overlaps and underlaps are effective and lead to productive attacking situations.

  • Add Defensive Pressure
Introduce a passive defender who will apply pressure on the ball carrier, encouraging the attacking players to make quicker decisions and refine their timing. The defender should try to intercept or disrupt passes without fully committing to a tackle.
Focus: This progression challenges players to maintain composure under pressure while still executing the planned attacking movements.

  • Introduce a Target Player
Add a target player at the far end of the grid or zone, where the attacking players aim to deliver the final pass. This will allow the team to focus on completing the attacking patterns with a clear goal in mind, finishing the drill with a shot or cross.
Focus: This will emphasize the importance of combining and overlapping runs with the ultimate goal of creating scoring chances through effective passes and finishes.
