Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 50x65

  • This drill begins with a 2v2 in one of the wider boxes close to the halfway line. The objective is to score in the opposing team's mini-goal. If the attacking team scores, a new 2v2 begins in the opposite box. This format allows for fast-paced play and encourages both teams to work on their attacking and defending under pressure.

Should the team out of possession win the ball during the 2v2, they must quickly break out of the box and transition into a 3v3 on half the pitch. This progression forces the defending team to quickly shift into defensive mode while also promoting counter-attacking play and tactical awareness in transitioning from small-sided games to larger field play.

  • • Quick Transitions: Emphasize the importance of fast transitions, both when switching between attack and defense and when breaking out into the 3v3. Players must stay alert to capitalize on turnovers.

    • Compact Defending: When out of possession, defenders should focus on staying compact and denying space, making it harder for the attackers to break through and create a scoring opportunity.

    • Quick Decision-Making: Players should make quick decisions when transitioning to the 3v3 phase, taking advantage of numerical superiority or finding the right passing options.

    • Use of Width: Encourage players to use the full width of the field during the 3v3 phase, ensuring that the team with possession can stretch the defense and create space for attacking opportunities.

  • Add Time Limit on Attacks:

Introduce a time limit for each 2v2 phase (e.g., 20 seconds). If the attacking team doesn’t score within the allotted time, possession switches automatically.

Focus: This progression forces attackers to make quicker decisions and increases the intensity of the play, making the drill more dynamic.

  • Add a Neutral Player in 3v3:

In the 3v3 phase, add a neutral player who always plays with the team in possession. This creates a 4v3 situation, helping improve combination play and quick passes in attack.

Focus: This progression encourages players to work on their passing, movement, and combination play in a numerical advantage, while also testing the defenders’ ability to cover extra space.
