Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 40x36

  • This unopposed finishing practice is designed to develop attacking combinations and finishing techniques through three distinct phases. Each phase focuses on a different type of service and movement, helping attackers build confidence and consistency in front of goal.

In Phase 1, a centre forward receives a through ball while running off the shoulder of the defender and finishes. Phase 2 involves a wide player delivering a cross into the box for two centre forwards making attacking runs. Phase 3 switches play to the opposite wing, where the winger cuts inside and delivers a floated cross into the two forwards, encouraging timing, movement, and aerial finishing.

  • • Timing of Runs: Emphasize well-timed movements to stay onside and arrive in the right zones at the right moment.

    • Quality of Service: Wide players must focus on delivering accurate balls, whether driven, cut back, or floated.

    • Body Shape and Finishing Technique: Strikers should open up their body appropriately for different types of finishes—instep for placement or laces for power.

    • Communication: Attackers must coordinate and communicate when making runs to avoid overlapping and improve connection.

  • Add Passive Defenders:

Introduce a passive defender in each phase to add mild pressure, encouraging attackers to adjust positioning and decision-making under light opposition.

Focus: Helps players develop composure and positioning when faced with defenders, without compromising the unopposed structure.

  • Finish from Second Balls:

After each initial finish, a coach or server plays a second ball into the box for a reactive finish, simulating rebounds or loose balls.

Focus: Encourages quick reactions, second-phase attacking, and staying alert after the first action.
