Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 15 | Pitch size: 50x65

  • This drill focuses on playing out from the back under pressure and encourages structured build-up play through central areas. The objective is for the team in possession to work the ball through the thirds and progress into one of the three mini goals positioned across the halfway line.

The defending team looks to press high and regain possession. If they do, they initiate a counterattack using two wide players positioned in outer channels. This transition creates a 7v7 counterattacking scenario, promoting quick decision-making, spatial awareness, and the ability to exploit overloads.

  • • Structured Build-Up: Encourage the use of positional play, with defenders and midfielders offering passing lanes and support angles.

    • Patience in Possession: Reinforce the importance of not forcing passes—look to draw the press and find the right moment to play through.

    • Counter-Press Reaction: Immediately upon losing possession, players should react and organize to prevent the counterattack.

    • Wide Support: The two wide players must time their involvement and provide quick, high-quality support during the counter phase.

  • Limit Touches in Defensive Third:

Restrict players in the defensive third to two touches to promote quicker decision-making and movement off the ball.

Focus: Improves ball circulation speed and forces players to think ahead under pressure.

  • Add a Time Limit on Counter Attacks:

Once possession is won, the counterattacking team must attempt to score within 10 seconds.

Focus: Encourages fast breaks, urgency, and efficiency during transitions.
