Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 10x10

  • In this drill, a defender initiates play by passing the ball to an attacker and immediately applies pressure. The attacker must then dribble through one of two designated gates while the defender simultaneously runs through one of the gates to close down space. This forces the attacker to take a precise, clean first touch away from the defender and towards the opposite gate to maintain possession and create space.

This exercise improves first touch accuracy, decision-making under pressure, and close ball control. It encourages attackers to read the defender’s movement quickly and adapt their touch accordingly to evade pressure effectively.

  • • Stress the importance of a sharp, controlled first touch away from pressure – This enables the attacker to maintain possession and create space quickly.

    • Encourage attackers to scan the field before receiving the pass – This improves awareness of gate positions and defender’s approach.

    • Remind defenders to time their approach carefully to force errors without fouling – Proper defensive timing increases pressure effectiveness and realism.

    • Emphasize body positioning and balance to allow quick changes of direction – Both attacker and defender benefit from strong stance and agility during the duel.

  • Narrower Gates

Reduce the width of the gates to increase the difficulty of dribbling through and require more precise touches. This forces attackers to focus heavily on accuracy and close control to succeed.

Focus: Enhance technical accuracy and quick decision-making under tighter spatial constraints, improving ball mastery under pressure.
