Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This practice starts with a 4v2 rondo on the outside of the grid where the possession team focuses on quick, accurate passing to maintain control. Once the team completes a set number of passes, they earn the right to transfer the ball into the main pitch, which measures approximately 36x40 yards. At this point, the possession players can run into the pitch themselves to join and begin a 6v6 attacking phase, encouraging smooth transitions from tight possession to open play.

The main aim is to develop players’ ability to maintain composure and quick passing in tight spaces, then immediately apply those skills in a larger attacking scenario. Players must adjust from high-pressure rondo conditions to creating attacking opportunities in the more open small-sided game.

  • • Encourage sharp, precise passing to maintain possession during the rondo – This builds technical control and decision-making speed essential for effective ball retention.

    • Stress communication and spatial awareness when transitioning between phases – Players must coordinate runs and positioning to exploit space and maintain attacking rhythm efficiently.

    • Emphasize quick decision-making to identify passing options in tight spaces – This helps break defensive pressure and maintain momentum heading into the SSG phase.

    • Remind players to stay alert and ready to switch mindset quickly – Smooth transitions between rondo and SSG improve game realism and tactical adaptability during play.

  • Increased Pass Requirement

Increase the number of passes required to transition from the rondo to the SSG, challenging players to maintain longer possession sequences under pressure.

Focus: Improve sustained ball control and patience during buildup to simulate real match possession demands.

  • Defensive Pressure in Rondo

Add a third defender to the rondo phase to intensify pressure, forcing quicker decisions and sharper ball control before transitioning.

Focus: Enhance technical precision and composure when facing increased defensive pressure in tight spaces.
