Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • In this counter-attacking drill, play starts with a 2-3 pass combination between 4 attackers who then enter the live zone to attack 4v2 with the intention to score. Two extra defenders recover from wide areas (acting as recovering full backs) and attempt to restore balance by closing down space quickly.

The drill develops rapid transition play, decision-making in numerical overloads, and defensive recovery runs. Players focus on quick passing, movement off the ball, and composure under pressure to exploit or deny scoring chances during fast breaks.

  • • Emphasize quick, accurate passing to maintain attacking momentum – This helps players exploit gaps before defenders can recover and disrupt the attack effectively.

    • Stress effective communication and constant movement off the ball – Creating space and passing options is essential for breaking down defensive lines under pressure.

    • Encourage attackers to identify and exploit wide full backs’ positioning – Gaining numerical advantages forces defenders into difficult decisions and opens scoring chances.

    • Highlight the importance of defensive recovery runs by full backs – Attackers must anticipate these runs to adjust their timing and maintain attacking flow seamlessly.

  • Increased Defensive Pressure

Add one more defender to the live zone to create a 4v3 situation, increasing the defensive pressure and requiring faster decision-making.

Focus: Improve quick passing accuracy and off-the-ball movement under higher defensive pressure.
