Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch
In this semi-opposed attacking practice, play starts with the ball moving from the central area out wide. A 2-player unopposed combination between the winger and full back takes place to build the attack. Once the ball is delivered into the box for the 3 attackers, the phase becomes opposed as 2 defenders actively try to protect the goal and defend the attackers.
This drill focuses on quick, precise passing and combination play in wide areas, before transitioning into a realistic, pressured finishing scenario. It encourages attackers to time runs well and make effective decisions under defensive pressure.
• Emphasize crisp, accurate passing in wide areas – This helps create space and opens opportunities before delivering into the penalty box effectively.
• Encourage strong communication between winger and full back – Coordinated movement is key to creating effective overlaps and passing angles quickly.
• Remind attackers to time runs and find pockets of space in the box – Movement off the ball is vital to beat defenders and create clear scoring chances.
• Stress defenders’ positioning and anticipation inside the box – They must maintain compactness and focus on intercepting crosses or blocking shots decisively.
Add defensive pressure earlier
Introduce a defender in the wide zone to pressure the winger and full back during their combination, increasing the challenge to maintain possession and execute the pass under pressure.
Focus: Improve composure and quick decision-making under early pressure in build-up play situations.
Limit attacking touches
Restrict attackers to a maximum of two touches once the ball enters the box, encouraging sharper finishing and faster decision-making under defensive pressure effectively.
Focus: Enhance first-touch control and quick shot execution in tight, high-pressure situations consistently.
