Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This attacking practice focuses on 3v3 attacking play with an emphasis on quick transitions and creating goal-scoring opportunities. The drill starts with both teams of 3 sprinting and switching sides. Once both teams are set, a 3v3 phase begins, where the attacking team aims to score into any of the two mini goals. If the defending team wins possession, they must dribble the ball to any of the 3 poles located directly ahead to complete the transition. Teams will swap roles throughout the practice to ensure multiple reps and high intensity.

  • • Attacking Shape and Movement – Encourage the attacking team to spread out and create passing lanes, using quick passes and off-the-ball movement to break down the defense. Players should aim to combine and create space for each other in tight areas.

    • Quick Transitions – When possession changes, players must react quickly. The defending team should immediately look to exploit the counter-attack, dribbling to the poles as fast as possible. The attacking team must transition into defense and set up quickly to regain possession.

    • Decision-Making in Attack – Attackers should be encouraged to make quick decisions when they have the ball. They need to decide whether to shoot, pass, or dribble based on the positioning of defenders and teammates. Using a mix of low and high tempo play will keep the defenders guessing.

    • Defensive Shape – Defenders should focus on staying compact, closing down space, and applying pressure to the ball carrier. Encourage them to anticipate passes and block shooting lanes, while also staying aware of any potential runs from the attackers.

  • Limit Touches for Attackers
Limit the attackers to 2 touches (one for control and one for pass or finish). This will encourage quicker decision-making and increase the tempo of play, forcing players to move the ball faster and more efficiently.

    Focus:
Increases the pace of the game and emphasizes quick ball movement in tight spaces.

  • Add an Extra Defender for More Challenge
Introduce an additional defender to make it a 4v3 in favor of the defending team. This will challenge the attackers to find creative ways to break down the defense, such as playing quicker combinations or using width to stretch the defense.

    Focus:
Develops attacking creativity and the ability to break down overloaded defensive situations. Also reinforces defensive discipline when under increased pressure.
