Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • In this technical passing practice, players focus on key principles used in the build-up phase, such as penetration and movement. The practice begins with a bounce pass combination between players, helping them develop their passing accuracy and timing.

Once the bounce pass combination is complete, the players will then play a line-breaking forward pass, simulating progression and breaking defensive lines in the build-up phase. This practice replicates real match situations, where quick, incisive passing can progress the play forward, bypassing defenders and moving the ball into more dangerous areas.

  • • Penetration – Emphasize the importance of penetrating passes that break through the opposition's defensive lines. These passes should be executed with precision and timing to advance the play and create attacking opportunities.

    • Movement – Players should focus on dynamic movement after playing the initial pass. Encourage players to move into space to provide passing options and support for the player in possession. Timed runs into key areas should allow for better passing angles and options for the ball carrier.

    • Bounce Pass Combinations – The practice starts with bounce passes to help players develop their passing rhythm. Encourage players to focus on keeping the ball close and accurate when playing these combinations to ensure control and effective build-up play.

    • Forward Progression – After the bounce passes, the focus should shift to playing a forward pass that breaks lines. Encourage players to look for the best available options—whether it's a pass into space for a runner or a through ball splitting the defense. The goal is to create forward momentum and penetrate the defensive lines.

    • First Touch and Decision-Making – Players should work on their first touch to ensure they can control and pass quickly in tight spaces. Emphasize the importance of making quick decisions on when to pass and when to move into space to support the ball carrier.

  • Add Pressure to the Passing
Introduce light defensive pressure after the bounce pass phase. This will require players to think quicker and make faster decisions when playing forward passes to break the lines. The defenders should pressure the passer without fully engaging to still allow for technical development.

    Focus:
Helps players work on their decision-making under pressure and improve their ability to execute line-breaking passes in more realistic game situations.

  • Add More Players for Movement and Support
Add more players into the practice to replicate a larger build-up. For example, have two additional players in the center of the field that can either create passing lanes or support the ball carrier, adding more options for ball circulation and movement.

    Focus:
Improves the ability to link up play and develop fluid build-up in tighter spaces, with increased support and options for the player in possession.
