Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: Half Pitch

  • This passing practice allows players to improve their line-breaking passing during the build-up phase. With two variations, players can work on breaking lines into midfield and also directly into the forward line using third-man combinations.

  • • Breaking Lines Efficiently – Emphasize the importance of recognizing when and how to break defensive lines with passes, either into midfield or directly into the forward line. Players should focus on finding space and timing their runs for the ball.

    • Third-Man Combinations – Encourage players to use third-man runs to create options and space. The passer should always be aware of their teammate’s positioning and look to play a quick, incisive pass into the forward line.

    • Passing Accuracy – Focus on the accuracy and weight of the pass when breaking the lines. The ball should be played into space, allowing the receiving player to attack or progress play with minimal delay.

    • Movement Off the Ball – Ensure players are constantly moving to support the player in possession. Timing and positioning are key to making the best passing options available for the player in possession.

  • Add Defenders

Introduce one or two passive defenders to create pressure on the build-up play. The attackers must still focus on breaking the lines while managing the increased pressure.

Focus: Improving decision-making and the ability to break lines under pressure.

  • Speed Up the Build-Up

Reduce the time allowed to make passes in the build-up phase. This forces players to play quicker and encourages faster line-breaking passes and movement.

Focus: Speeding up the decision-making process and execution of line-breaking passes.
