Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 4 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This is a fun 1v1 practice where players begin by making an attacking pass into a teammate positioned on one side of the grid. After the pass, the player must transition to the opposite side of the grid to defend against an incoming attack. Players should swap roles throughout the practice to ensure everyone gets a chance to attack and defend. Scoring should be used to add a competitive edge to the drill.

  • • Attacking Pass and Movement – The player making the pass should focus on delivering an accurate and weighted pass to their teammate. After the pass, they must quickly transition, sprinting across the grid to their defensive position.

    • Defending the 1v1 – Upon arriving at the defending side, the player should adopt a defensive stance, keeping their body between the ball and the goal. Emphasize quick decision-making and maintaining good positioning to challenge the attacker effectively.

    • Quick Transitions – Focus on the speed and fluidity of the transition between attacking and defending. The ability to switch between these roles quickly is key to the drill’s effectiveness.

    • Competitive Edge – To increase the intensity, players should keep track of the score and aim to win as many 1v1s as possible, using competition as a motivational tool.

  • Add Time Pressure

Introduce a time limit to each attacking and defending phase (e.g., 10 seconds). This forces players to make quicker decisions and encourages faster transitions.

Focus: Improve the speed of transitions and the ability to make quick decisions under time pressure.

  • Increase Defensive Pressure

Add a second defender to the defending side of the grid, making it a 2v1 scenario. This increases the defensive challenge and forces the attacking player to be more creative and quick in their attacking phase.

Focus: Develop the attacking player's ability to read the defensive setup and make faster, more effective decisions.
