Instructions/Setup:
This small-sided game begins with a short burst of conditioning work where players sprint from their designated grid to the sideline and back. This sprint acts as a warm-up and prepares players for the intensity of the game. Once the players return to their grid, the small-sided game begins immediately, allowing the players to transition into game situations with no break in play. The game lasts for 30 seconds or until a goal is scored, ensuring that players remain engaged and focused on maintaining a high level of intensity throughout the drill.
After either 30 seconds of play or a goal being scored, the teams jog back to the sideline, complete another sprint, and restart the cycle. This continuous rotation helps to develop both fitness and game-related skills under fatigue, simulating match conditions where players must remain sharp even as they get tired.
Coaching Notes:
• Speed and Endurance: Emphasize the importance of sprinting with maximum effort during the conditioning phase to simulate match intensity and improve overall fitness.
• Quick Transition: Players should transition quickly from the conditioning to the game phase, ensuring they remain focused and ready to compete immediately once play begins.
• Game Focus Under Fatigue: Remind players to maintain concentration and execute technical skills properly during the 30-second game phase, despite fatigue from the sprints.
• Team Communication: Encourage players to communicate effectively throughout the drill, especially during transitions, to maintain team structure and shape during the game.
Progression 1: Increase Sprint Distance:
Extend the sprint distance or reduce the rest time between sprints to increase the conditioning demand and further challenge players’ stamina.
Focus: Increases the conditioning element and simulates match fatigue, testing players' ability to maintain high intensity and decision-making throughout the game.
Progression 2: Limit Touches in the Game Phase:
Limit the number of touches players can take during the small-sided game (e.g., two touches only) to increase the speed of play and encourage quicker decision-making.
Focus: Encourages players to think quickly and make fast decisions while under fatigue, promoting faster ball movement and sharper tactical awareness.
