Instructions/Setup:

This drill begins with the coach serving a ball to one of the two attacking players. The attacker will then play out a 1v1 scenario against the defender, attempting to score in one of the two goals on a small-sided pitch. The 1v1 continues until the ball goes dead, either by a goal being scored, a tackle made, or the ball going out of bounds. Once the first phase concludes, the coach immediately serves a second ball into the second attacker, who now plays a 1v1 in the opposite direction, ensuring both attackers get multiple opportunities to showcase their skills.

This drill emphasizes individual attacking and defending skills, focusing on decision-making, dribbling, and creating space in 1v1 situations. The quick transitions between each phase of the drill simulate match-like conditions, allowing players to work on their reactions and ability to perform under pressure.

Coaching Notes:

• Attacking Movement: Encourage attackers to use quick, sharp movements to beat the defender, utilizing feints, cuts, and changes of pace to create space.

• Defensive Positioning: Focus on defenders maintaining a solid stance, forcing attackers wide and limiting their options while staying compact to block shots.

• Decision-Making: Attackers should be encouraged to assess the situation quickly—whether to take on the defender, pass, or shoot, based on the position of the defender.

• Quick Transitions: Remind players to transition immediately after the ball goes dead, ensuring they are always ready to attack or defend at full intensity when the next phase begins.

Progression 1: Introduce Limited Touches for Attackers:

Limit attackers to only two or three touches on the ball during the 1v1 phase. This encourages faster play and decision-making, while also improving ball control and efficiency.

Focus: Promotes quick decision-making and improves attackers' ability to execute under pressure with fewer touches.

Progression 2: Add a Neutral:

Introduce a neutral to the 1v1 phase, creating a 2v1 situation for the attacker. This progression increases the challenge for the attacker, forcing them to think more tactically and make quicker decisions.

Focus: Improves the attacker’s ability to handle pressure from multiple defenders and encourages better passing and positioning to break down defensive setups.
