Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 40x36

  • This drill begins with a 3v1 rondo, where the three attacking players maintain possession against a single defender. After completing a specified number of passes, the attacking team breaks out of the rondo and transitions into a 3v2 attack. The aim is to exploit the overload created during the breakout and attempt to score in one of the mini goals positioned on either side of the area. If the defending players manage to win possession during the rondo phase, they have the opportunity to counter-attack and score in the mini goals.

This drill emphasizes quick decision-making, ball retention under pressure, and rapid transition from defensive to attacking play. It also provides valuable practice in both attacking and defensive phases, simulating match situations where players must capitalize on overloads and win possession in tight spaces.

  • • Quick Passing: Encourage the attacking players to focus on quick, sharp passing to retain possession in the 3v1, avoiding any slow touches that may allow the defender to intercept.

    • Movement Off the Ball: Instruct the attacking players to move constantly to create passing lanes, making it easier for the ball carrier to find options and maintain possession.

    • Attacking Transition: Once the ball breaks out of the rondo, emphasize the need for fast transitions, with attacking players immediately looking to exploit the 3v2 overload and move the ball into dangerous areas.

    • Defensive Pressure: For the defending player in the rondo, highlight the importance of positioning and anticipation, ensuring they read the game and attempt to intercept or force mistakes without diving into tackles unnecessarily.

  • Add a Time Limit for Breakout:

Introduce a time limit for how long the breakout can take after leaving the rondo. This forces the attacking players to make quicker decisions during the transition and encourages urgency in moving the ball forward into the 3v2 scenario.

Focus: Increases tempo, helping players practice quick counter-attacks and develop the ability to exploit overloads efficiently.
