Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 40x60
This drill starts with a 5v3 rondo, where the team in possession must complete a minimum of 8 passes before having the opportunity to score in either of the 2 mini-goals positioned around the grid. The defending team is tasked with disrupting possession and attempting to win the ball back through tactical pressure and interception. Once possession is won, the defending team transitions into an immediate counter-attack, aiming to score in the main goal with a 4v2 advantage.
The key focus of this practice is to develop quick ball movement, accurate passing, and decision-making under pressure for the team in possession. The defending team, on the other hand, should focus on anticipation, cutting off passing lanes, and being proactive in winning the ball back to launch a swift counter-attack. This drill combines possession play with a realistic transition into attack, simulating game situations that require both technical and tactical awareness.
• Quick Ball Movement: Emphasize fast, accurate passing to help the possession team complete the required number of passes. Encourage players to switch the ball and look for gaps in the defense to exploit.
• Effective Pressing: The defending team should focus on closing down passing lanes and applying pressure at the right moments to force turnovers. Reinforce the importance of positioning and communication to prevent the ball from being passed easily.
• Transition to Attack: Once possession is won, the defending team must transition quickly and decisively into a 4v2 counter-attack. Players should focus on creating overloads and exploiting the numerical advantage in the attacking phase.
• Mini-Goal Scoring: For the attacking team, emphasize calmness and precision when shooting at the mini-goals. Encourage players to be creative in their movement and to look for the best passing option to break the defense.
Introduce a Time Limit:
Limit the amount of time the possession team has to complete the 8 passes before being allowed to score. This will force quicker decision-making and faster transitions.
Focus: Enhances the speed of passing and creates a more competitive, game-like environment where decisions must be made quickly.
Add a Second Defender to the Counter-Attack:
Increase the difficulty for the counter-attacking team by adding a second defender, making the 4v2 counter-attack a 4v3. This will encourage more strategic movement from the counter-attacking players.
Focus: Helps the attacking team work on finding solutions to break down a more organized defense while maintaining the tempo of their attack.
