Instructions/Setup:

This drill, frequently used by Jose Mourinho, is designed to develop a player’s ability to combine and finish after completing a set SAQ (Speed, Agility, and Quickness) routine. The practice begins with players running through a series of agility cones, focusing on rapid footwork and quick direction changes. Once through the SAQ section, players receive a pass and immediately transition into a finishing opportunity on goal. The drill emphasizes both physical conditioning and sharp finishing, ensuring players can execute under pressure and transition smoothly between different aspects of play.

The integration of SAQ exercises with finishing adds a dynamic layer to the practice, pushing players to develop their technical and physical skills simultaneously. The high intensity of the drill helps improve reaction times, coordination, and mental sharpness while maintaining a focus on the technical execution of the finish. This combination of fitness and finishing is ideal for game situations that require players to react quickly and be clinical in front of goal.

Coaching Notes:

• Agility and Speed: Encourage players to maintain high intensity throughout the SAQ portion, focusing on fast, explosive movements and quick changes of direction to replicate match scenarios.

• Quick Decision-Making: After completing the SAQ section, players should quickly assess their options for the finish. Encourage them to be calm and precise with their shot selection, whether that’s going for a power finish or placing the ball accurately.

• Finishing Under Pressure: The player should aim to take their shot immediately after the SAQ section, simulating the pressure of a real match where they need to finish quickly after making a run or receiving the ball.

• Body Positioning: Remind players to maintain good body positioning throughout the drill, especially when receiving the ball after the SAQ section. Proper body alignment will help them execute cleaner, more controlled finishes.

Progression 1: Add Defenders:

Introduce one or two passive defenders after the SAQ section to apply pressure on the attacking player, forcing them to make quicker decisions and increase the intensity of the finish.

Focus: This progression simulates more game-like conditions where players need to finish under pressure while also making sure their movement through the cones remains sharp.

Progression 2: Multiple Finishing Options:

Allow players to choose different types of finishes after completing the SAQ routine (e.g., volley, chip, driven shot). This progression tests their ability to adapt to various scenarios in front of goal.

Focus: Encourages versatility in finishing techniques and helps players improve their ability to make the best decision based on the situation.
