Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 20x25

  • This emergency defending practice begins with one of the defenders playing a pass into the two forwards. Immediately after releasing the ball, that defender must step out and engage the attackers, creating a brief 1v2 situation. During this window, the attackers are encouraged to attack quickly and exploit the overload before defensive support arrives.

As the first defender engages, a second defender sprints around a designated pole or cone before recovering back into the practice. Their goal is to restore balance and create a 2v2 as quickly as possible. The attackers attempt to finish the attack with speed, while the defenders work on emergency recovery, delaying actions, and compactness under pressure.

  • • Exploit the Overload: Encourage attackers to attack early—drive forward, combine quickly or isolate the lone defender before the second defender arrives.

    • Defensive Delaying: Coach the first defender to delay and slow the attackers down, buying time for the recovering defender to enter the phase.

    • Recovery Sprint Quality: The recovering defender should sprint around the outside marker with urgency, then enter with control to re-establish defensive shape.

    • Attacking Tempo: Highlight the need for fast, purposeful movements from the forwards to take full advantage of the momentary 2v1.

  • Introduce a Time Constraint for Attackers:
Add a 3–4 second limit for the attackers to create a shooting opportunity before the recovering defender arrives. This sharpens their intent and forces quicker decision-making.

Focus: Speeds up attacking actions and encourages decisive exploitation of overloads.
