Instructions/Setup:
This drill begins with a 2v2 in the first zone, where the team in possession aims to progress the ball into the next zone. If successful, one player from the attacking team can cross the line to create a 3v2 in the second zone. The objective is for the attacking team to work together, progress the ball, and create overloads to increase their chances of scoring.
The players in the second zone must cross a dotted line in order to score, encouraging them to drive forward and make decisive runs once the ball has been played into the next zone. The defenders are tasked with limiting space and denying the attacking team from getting a shot at the goal.
Coaching Notes:
• Progressive Play: Emphasize the importance of quick passing and movement to progress the ball from one zone to the next, ensuring the team doesn't waste time or possession in the first zone.
• Creating Overloads: Once the attacking team is able to progress the ball, the additional player joining to create a 3v2 should focus on exploiting the numerical advantage and creating space for goal-scoring opportunities.
• Communication: Encourage players to communicate and make sure everyone is on the same page when transitioning from zone to zone, ensuring the attacking team keeps fluid movement and maintains possession.
• Defensive Awareness: Defenders must stay compact and organized in the first zone, while transitioning quickly to limit the attacking team’s space once the overload is created in the second zone.
Progression 1: Add More Defenders in the Second Zone:
Increase the number of defenders in the second zone to make the transition from 2v2 to 3v2 more difficult, forcing the attacking team to work harder for space and possession.
Focus: This progression develops attacking players' decision-making skills, as they must now choose when to create overloads and when to be patient with possession.
Progression 2: Score in Multiple Zones:
Allow the attacking team to score in any zone once they cross the dotted line, not just in the second zone. This forces the attackers to be more dynamic in their movement and adjust to different spaces for potential scoring chances.
Focus: This progression encourages adaptability and creativity from the attacking players, as they need to be aware of multiple options for scoring across the different zones.
