Instructions/Setup:
This 1v1 drill focuses on encouraging players to use their body effectively to escape opposition and drive through one of the two gates located on the outer sides of the grid in each zone. The objective is to develop close control, quick decision-making, and the ability to protect the ball while under pressure. Players must use their body to shield the ball and find a route to break free, either by using pace or skill.
Once they successfully escape through one of the gates and transition into the next zone, they will pass the ball to the next attacking player and immediately switch roles to defend. The new defender must try to stop the oncoming attacker from escaping through the gates, ensuring a continuous flow of attacking and defensive transitions.
Coaching Notes:
• Body Positioning: Emphasize the importance of using the body to shield the ball when under pressure. Players should focus on keeping the ball close and using their body to protect it while driving toward the gates.
• Quick Decision-Making: Encourage players to make quick decisions when approaching the gates, either using skill or pace to break free from the defender.
• Transitioning Quickly: After escaping through the gate, players must quickly transition to a defensive role, staying alert to stop the next attacker from breaking through the gates.
• Defensive Awareness: Defenders should focus on closing down the attacker’s space, positioning themselves to block potential escape routes and prevent the attacker from passing through the gates.
