Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: X

  • This finishing drill is designed to develop the relationship between the front two strikers. The focus is on creating quick, effective link-up play between the forwards through a variety of passes and movements, ultimately leading to an unopposed finish.

The drill helps improve communication, timing, and understanding between two attacking players, enhancing their ability to combine in match situations.

  • • Pass from Midfielder: The drill begins with a pass played from a midfielder into one of the forwards. The receiving forward should be aware of their positioning and make sure they receive the ball in a way that allows them to quickly combine with the second striker.

    • Link-Up Play Between Strikers: After receiving the ball, the forward will play a pass to the second striker, either through a quick 1-2 combination, a lay-off, or a direct pass depending on the situation. Emphasize the importance of precise passing and the quick movement off the ball. The two forwards should be looking to communicate with each other, either verbally or with body language, to ensure fluid link-up play.

    • Movement: Both forwards should focus on intelligent, dynamic movement to create space for each other. One striker should always look to make a movement that pulls the defender out of position, allowing the other striker to receive the ball in a dangerous area.

    • Finishing: Once the second striker receives the ball, they should finish with composure, either with a placed shot or a powerful strike depending on the situation. The key is to finish quickly and efficiently, capitalizing on the work done by both forwards in the link-up play.

    • Timing and Decision-Making: The forwards must time their movements to ensure they are available for the pass and can take advantage of any gaps in the defense. They must also make quick decisions on whether to play a one-touch pass, take a touch to control the ball, or take a shot on goal.

  • Add Defensive Pressure:

Introduce one or two defenders to apply light pressure to the forwards as they combine. This will force the strikers to complete the link-up play under pressure, simulating a more realistic game scenario.

Focus: Enhances the ability to link up and finish under defensive pressure.

  • Offside Rule:

Introduce the offside rule, meaning the forwards must time their runs carefully and avoid being caught offside when making their movements. This will improve their timing and understanding of attacking runs.

Focus: Improves the awareness of offside traps and timing of forward runs.
