Instructions/Setup:

This passing practice is designed to help build up play from the back, focusing on central defenders playing forward passes to players receiving between the lines. The use of mannequins replicates a defensive block, helping players understand the spatial dynamics and timing required to break down defensive lines.

The practice focuses on improving decision-making, accuracy in passing, and understanding movement off the ball in tight spaces.

Coaching Notes:

• Starting Play with the Central Defenders: The drill begins with the central defenders playing a forward pass to a midfielder or attacker positioned between the lines of the defensive block. The defenders should be encouraged to vary the types of passes, using both direct and indirect methods to break the lines of defense.

• Receiving Between the Lines: The player receiving the ball between the lines should focus on creating space to receive and should have their body position open to allow for a quick, controlled first touch. Emphasize the importance of awareness—players need to see both their immediate surroundings and the space behind the defensive line to make the correct decision.

• Role of the Mannequins: The mannequins are positioned to simulate a defensive block, with 8 mannequins representing defenders in various positions on the field. The player receiving the ball between the lines should focus on how to maneuver around the defenders, either by playing quick passes, using feints, or by finding pockets of space to exploit.

• Movement off the Ball: The players should focus on making intelligent runs to create space between the defensive lines, ensuring the player receiving the ball has options for the next pass. Good off-the-ball movement is key to creating passing lanes and breaking through defensive lines.

• Progression to Passing and Moving: After receiving the ball, the player should look to quickly pass to the next player or forward into the attacking third. The player who passed the ball initially should follow their pass to support the next phase of play, continuing the build-up by moving into a new position or creating an option for the next pass.

Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure:

Introduce one or two defenders to actively pressure the receiving player after the forward pass. This will force the player to be more decisive with their first touch and pass while under pressure.

Focus: Enhances decision-making under pressure and reinforces build-up play under defensive duress.
