Instructions/Setup:

This drill begins with a 2v1 scenario in a wide channel, where the two attackers work together using quick combinations and movement to break down the lone defender and score into a mini goal. The drill is designed to focus on quick decision-making, effective off-the-ball movement, and clinical finishing.

The initial phase has the two attackers combining to manipulate the defender’s position and create space for a goal-scoring opportunity. The first attacker should focus on making sharp runs into space and offering passing options, while the second attacker must be prepared to either receive the ball and shoot or provide support by making a well-timed run to assist in the attack. The combination should be quick, with minimal touches, to disorient the defender and create a clear path to goal.

Coaching Notes:

• Combination Play: Emphasize sharp, one-touch passing to move the ball quickly and break down the defender. Encourage attacking players to vary their passing angles and make intelligent, overlapping runs to confuse the defender and open up space.

• Off-the-Ball Movement: The attackers must continuously move to offer passing options. As one attacker plays a pass, they should move into space to either receive the ball back or support the other player’s attack. Quick and intelligent movement off the ball is critical in breaking down the defense.

• Timing and Precision: The attackers must time their passes and runs well to ensure the ball reaches the correct player at the right moment. Precision is key—misplaced passes or poorly timed runs will allow the defender to regain control.

• Finishing Under Pressure: After completing the initial 2v1 phase, one of the attackers exits the grid and receives an unopposed pass from the coach. This phase allows the player to focus on taking a composed shot on goal. Encourage players to focus on their technique, keeping their shot controlled and aimed for placement rather than just power.

• Defender’s Role: The defender must actively try to disrupt the attacking combination by closing down space and forcing the attackers to make quick decisions. The defender’s positioning should encourage attackers to use skill and vision to break through.

• Transition to Unopposed Finish: After the 2v1 phase, the player who exits the grid will be in a position to receive the ball from the coach and complete an unopposed finish. This phase simulates the transition from attack to finish, requiring the player to adjust quickly from a passing sequence to a final shot on goal.
