Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 4 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This 3-phase finishing drill works on multiple types of finishes. In the first phase, the player drives inside from the wide area before taking a shot on goal. In the second phase, the player receives the ball on the outside and shoots across goal. In the third phase, the player works on finishing from sharp movements across the defender’s path, simulating a real-game scenario where attackers must adjust quickly to the ball and take advantage of space in the box.

  • • Driving Inside (Phase 1) – Encourage the player to commit to driving inside with pace, using their body to shield the ball from the defender. Once inside the box, the player should be focused on keeping the shot low and accurate, aiming for the far corner or the near post.

    • Shooting Across Goal (Phase 2) – When receiving the ball on the outside, players should focus on staying composed and shooting across the goal, either with the inside of the foot for accuracy or the laces for power. The emphasis should be on aiming for the far post to beat the goalkeeper.

    • Finishing After Quick Movements (Phase 3) – Players should focus on making sharp movements across the defender’s path, positioning themselves to receive the ball in space. This requires quick footwork and a quick decision to finish with either a first-time shot or a quick controlled touch before shooting.

    • Variation of Finishing Techniques – Players should be encouraged to vary their finishing techniques depending on the angle and situation. Whether it's a driven shot, a chip, or a side-footed finish, the player must adapt to the ball’s delivery and the defensive pressure.

  • Add a Defender
Introduce a defender who can apply light pressure to the player during each finishing phase, simulating real defensive challenges.
Focus: Forces players to make quicker decisions and improve their ability to finish under pressure.

  • Limit the Time for Each Finish
Set a time limit for each finishing phase, encouraging the attacker to complete each phase quickly and with composure.
Focus: Increases the intensity and helps players develop the ability to finish in game-like scenarios where time and space are limited.
